This Year, Burger King Will Close Hundreds Of Locations!

Following a period of declining sales and a decline in customer loyalty, Burger King initiated a bold and ambitious revival initiative in 2022.

The fast-food giant's path to recovery, however, is paved with the closure of hundreds of restaurants.

Late last week, Restaurant Brands International (RBI), the parent company of Burger King, disclosed the most recent quarterly results for the burger chain.

The results revealed a 10.3% growth in system-wide sales and a 6.6% increase in same-store sales in the United States.

However, executives disclosed on an earnings call with investors on November 3 that Burger King's total number of restaurants had decreased by 2.8% year-over-year, or by nearly 200 locations.

Despite the fact that the closure of nearly 200 restaurants in the past year may appear to be an indication of further difficulties for the chain, Burger King maintains that the downsizing is essential.

According to Burger King's 2.8% decline in restaurant count, Kobza explained on the November 3 earnings call, the closure of "older and lower performing restaurants to support a more modern system increasingly run by better operators."

Put simply, the organization has been closing underperforming locations with the ultimate goal of improving the overall health of the Burger King system.

Burger King has also been working to transfer control of restaurants currently under the management of struggling franchisees to more robust and seasoned operators.

Simultaneously, the organization is deep within its $400 million Reclaim the Flame investment initiative, which is designed to enhance the reputation and brand of Burger King.
